Rheumatoid arthritis: not the life sentence it used to be

adriana barton

VANCOUVER— From Monday’s Globe and Mail
Published

It started with a burning pain in her finger and the ball of her foot. Within a month, Cheryl Koehn, a former Olympic volleyball player, was in agony as more than 35 joints in her body became so swollen that she was wheelchair bound.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Image via Wikipedia

Ms. Koehn, then aged 27, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

She spent the next 15 years struggling to recover some of her physical functioning. It was not until 2004 that she received her first infusion of biologics – a class of protein-based drugs derived from living cells. Twelve hours later, she held hands with her husband and partner of three years for the first time.

“You couldn’t touch my hands before – they were so painful and swollen,” says Ms. Koehn of Vancouver. She credits biologics, along with other medications, for helping her claw back 70 to 80 per cent of her ability to do everyday tasks. “I wouldn’t be able to walk without them.”

But if Ms. Koehn were diagnosed today, there’s a good chance doctors could have pushed her disease into remission from the start.

Early and aggressive treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is the medical breakthrough that few people – including many family doctors – have ever heard of.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disorder, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues leading to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. (Osteoarthritis, a less severe form of arthritis, tends to be caused by wear and tear of the joints and is often associated with aging.)

One in 100 Canadians has rheumatoid arthritis. Although it typically flares up in adults aged 40 to 50, it can strike at any age. But the disease can be halted if it’s caught early enough.

More than 15 years ago, researchers discovered that patients given a two-fold increase in dosage of a conventional drug for rheumatoid arthritis had a good chance of leading a normal life if they received treatment within six months of the first symptoms.

High-dose methotrexate – an older drug also used in chemotherapy – is effective in many patients, says Kam Shojania, director of the division of rheumatology at the University of British Columbia.

The side effects of methotrexate can be nasty, though, including nausea, fever, fatigue and low white-blood-cell count, as well as lung and liver lung damage. A newer strategy is to combine methotrexate with two other disease-modifying drugs as a form of “triple therapy.”

Nevertheless, the biggest advance in rheumatoid arthritis treatment is biologics, Dr. Shojania says. Now in use for more than a decade, biologics target specific steps in the inflammation process without wiping out the entire immune response. Compared with older drugs, which may take two to three months to start working, biologics often act within two weeks.

Although they do increase the risk of infections, biologics “keep patients working, functioning, being members of society,” Dr. Shojania says. “It’s amazing.”

Biologics are expensive, however. A year’s worth of injections or infusions costs upward of $20,000. Although these medications are covered to varying degrees by public-health plans, in most provinces, patients do not meet the criteria for a biologic unless they fail to respond to conventional drugs within six months.

That’s the treatment window for potential remission – before the disease attacks joints, cartilage and bones.

“If you wait six months and you have active rheumatoid arthritis, you will have irreversible damage,” says Edward Keystone, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and one of Canada’s leading rheumatologists.

Dr. Keystone notes that in Canada, half of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are not being seen by a specialist. Family doctors often mistake the disease for osteoarthritis and dismiss the symptoms as a normal problem of aging, he says. “This a big hurdle for us.”

Treatment delays may determine whether the patient remains productive or ends up like the 25 to 50 per cent of patients who are unable to work within 10 years of the disease onset, according to arthritis researcher Diane Lacaille at UBC.

The failure to diagnose the disease within six months is “akin to malpractice,” says John Esdaile, a Vancouver-based rheumatologist and founder of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada.

“Medical schools are not doing a good job of teaching even rudimentary aspects of musculoskeletal health,” he says, adding that family doctors are “really not up to date” in recognizing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and the urgency of a referral to a rheumatologist.

To raise awareness, Dr. Esdaile and colleagues recently developed ArthritisID PRO, an app designed to help doctors get up to speed on the latest guidelines for detection and treatment.

Together with Arthritis Consumer Experts – a grassroots organization founded by Ms. Koehn in 2000 – Dr. Esdaile and his team also launched ArthritisID for patient use. Both apps are free downloads at the iTunes store.

Dr. Esdaile notes it’s crucial for patients to talk to a doctor if they experience any symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, which tend to increase over a period of weeks or several months. Patients may have sore hands and knees or feel like there are stones in their shoes. They may feel unusually tired and stiff for more than an hour each morning, he says.

“The public needs to know these symptoms aren’t normal.”

Low Impact Exercises Helps Maintain Healthy Joints

Written by Frank Mangano

Osteoarthritis is one of the many types of arthritis that causes degeneration of the joints significantly affecting a person’s quality of life.  It is oftentimes characterized by joint stiffness, swelling in the affected area and pain.   The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases said that osteoarthritis is perhaps one of the most frequently-occurring forms of arthritis – the others being rheumatoid arthritis and gout – that affects approximately 27 million people, aged 25 or more, in the United States alone.

What is Osteoarthritis?

For many years, medical experts have devoted time, effort and money in order to determine the exact cause of osteoarthritis.  Sadly, the answers remain elusive. The damage in osteoarthritis starts at the cartilage – a tough connective tissue that is found in between joints as well as in other areas of the body such as the larynx and the outer ear – which is supposed to act as a “cushion” in order to prevent the end of two bones from rubbing unto each other. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage between the joints loses its elasticity and then degenerates.  In time, the cartilage may thin out, or disappear altogether, causing bones to rub unto each other leading to extreme pain.

The following factors may lead to the development of osteoarthritis:

  • Medical experts have discovered that genes, or heredity, can actually make a person more predisposed to develop osteoarthritis.  A particular gene is responsible for collagen production.  Collagen is an important protein component in cartilage.  Abnormality in the gene may lead to premature degradation of cartilage which may cause osteoarthritis.
  • Obesity puts on excessive amounts of pressure in the joints because of the excess weight, which may cause strain. The joints that are responsible in weight-bearing, such as the hip, knee and ankle joints, are the ones that are most commonly affected.
  • Being inactive for long periods may cause the joints to become stiff, dysfunctional and painful because muscles around the joint can weaken with inactivity.
  • On the other hand, overuse of the joints, or continuously exposing them to extreme, high-impact activities can cause repetitive strains and stresses. This may also lead to joint injuries.
  • It is said that the main cause of osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear.  In old age, the joints have been exposed to too much activity since childhood and this puts the person at increased risk for osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis can be debilitating.  It can significantly affect a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living sometimes causing the patient to lose independence.  Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Nodules in the fingers
  • Tenderness in the joints
  • Swelling
  • Crepitus (crackling sound upon joint movement)
  • Difficulty in movement

A Study on Osteoarthritis

The effects of osteoarthritis can be devastating.  This propels people, especially those who are in the field of medicine, to continuously look for ways to prevent the onset of the condition or to somehow slow its progression.

In line with this, a group of researchers enrolled 132 participants (66 men and 99 women whose ages ranged from 45 to 55) in the National Institutes of Health Osteoarthritis Initiative who have not exhibited signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis but whose risk for developing osteoarthritis of the knee is high.  In addition, 33 body mass index- and age-matched controls were also included in the study.

Basing on the participant’s response to the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) questionnaire, they were divided into three strength training and exercise levels.  The strength training groups were divided as to how often they performed these exercises:  none at all, minimal only and frequently.  The exercise levels were composed of sedentary, light and moderate to strenuous. Also, analysis was made on knee-bending activities.

What the Study Revealed

According to the senior author of the study, Dr. Thomas M. Link, the results revealed that joining in high impact activities like running for more than an hour daily, thrice a week or more, is linked to more cartilage degeneration and can potentially increase the risk for osteoarthritis development.  On one hand, participating in light exercise and avoiding repeated knee-bending activities can protect a person from osteoarthritis. Dr. Link is from San Francisco’s University of California, a chief of musculoskeletal imaging and a professor of radiology.

The participants were asked to undergo MRI exams, which showed that the group who engaged in light exercises and those with minimal strength training had the healthiest cartilage in the knee, as compared to the participants who either had frequent or no strength training at all. Women who indulged in moderate to strenuous exercises and did strength training were also linked to increased water content and degenerated collagen in their knees. A co-author of the study, Keegan K. Novis, B.S., R.N., said that the results suggests that performing moderate to strenuous exercises can speed up the degeneration of cartilage, putting women at a higher risk for osteoarthritis.

Moreover, the findings also indicated that doing knee-bending activities frequently, like climbing up more than 10 flights of stairs per day, squatting or kneeling for a minimum of 30 minutes daily, or lifting objects that weighs more than 25 pound, were linked to cartilage abnormalities and higher water content.

Conclusion

The researchers suggested that performing light exercises, like frequent walking and swimming, is a much safer choice in order to help maintain healthy cartilage and, of course, healthy joints.

How to Promote Healthy Joints Naturally

You probably have heard this many times already, but nevertheless, I’ll say it again: healthy eating helps promote a healthy body.  Contrary to what some people say, taking medications does not cure everything.  Aside from the expenses, you are also in danger of adverse effects that it can bring.  How about going for what is natural? You could start with making the decision to eat healthy, and eat foods that will help promote healthy joints.  Here are some of them:

  • Glucosamine is a compound that produces glycosaminoglycan which is needed for healthy cartilage.  Some of the foods that are rich in glucosamine include sweet almond oil, crab shells, lobster shells and shrimp shells.
  • Manganese is a mineral that helps build healthy cartilage. This supports the function of glucosamine inside the body.  Examples of food sources of manganese are nuts, green leafy vegetables, seafoods, whole grain breads and beans.
  • Omega-3 Fatty acids exert anti-inflammatory effects that helps ease swelling and pain associated with osteoarthritis.  Top food sources for Omega-3 Fatty Acids are egg yolks, walnuts, flax seeds, cod liver oil, and salmon.
  • Vitamin C helps the body in forming collagen which is a protein found in cartilage, tendons and bones.  Examples are kiwi fruit, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, papaya, potatoes, peaches, nectarines, lychees, raspberries, grapefruit, guava, black currant, orange, lemon, cabbage, cauliflower, and many more.

The Worst Possible Thing to Ignore if You Have Arthritis

Arthritis Natural Cures

Story at-a-glance

  • A diet enriched with omega-3 fats may help prevent osteoarthritis as well as slow its progression; benefit was seen in both cartilage and bone beneath cartilage
  • Omega-3 fats produce compounds called resolvins and protectins, which help quell inflammation before it can do too much damage to your tissues.
  • Numerous studies have been published on the remarkable effectiveness of the animal-based omega-3 fat krill oil in combating inflammation-related disorders such as arthritis

By Dr. Mercola
About one in five adults, or nearly 50 million Americans, have been diagnosed with arthritis, the most common form of which is osteoarthritis.

If you have osteoarthritis, the cartilage within your joints is progressively being damaged, and the synovial fluid that keeps your joints lubricated and cushioned is typically reduced as well.

The pain and joint stiffness that you feel is a result of your bones starting to come into contact with each other as cartilage and synovial fluid is reduced, and if you don’t take action it can become progressively worse until you are unable to carry out your normal daily activities.

More than 21 million Americans have trouble climbing stairs, getting dressed and staying active due to arthritis, a number that has jumped from 19 million just a few years back.

If you are one of the millions struggling with osteoarthritis, or want to avoid becoming one of them, one of the simplest and most powerful steps you can take is adding animal-based omega-3 fats to your diet. The research continues to pour in that these healthy fats have exciting potential to prevent and treat arthritis.
I have found an interesting article by Dr. Mercola on Arthritis Natural Cures and I have re-published it below for your convenience.

Omega-3 Fats Incredibly Important to Treat Osteoarthritis

According to the latest animal study, a diet enriched with omega-3 fats reduced the majority of disease indicatorsamong guinea pigs prone to developing osteoarthritis. This included both cartilage and subchondral bone changes, and the lead researcher noted that the evidence was strong that omega-3 fats may help prevent the disease and also slow its progression in those already diagnosed.Omega-3′s impact on joint health, arthritis, and inflammation is an active area of research, as they’re known to produce compounds called resolvins and protectins, which help quell inflammation before it can do too much damage to your tissues. Several studies have been published on the remarkable effectiveness of the animal-based omega-3 fat krill oil in combating inflammation-related disorders, including arthritis. Three notable examples are:

  • A 2007 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition investigated krill oil’s ability to reduce inflammation. Researchers found that 300 mg krill oil per day significantly reduced inflammation, pain, stiffness and functional impairment after just 7 days, and even more profoundly after 14 days.
  • A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 2005 showed similar findings with respect to reducing inflammation and arthritis symptoms, for both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis sufferers.
  • A study in Advances in Therapy found participants with moderate-to-severe hip or knee osteoarthritis who received 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate along with 200 mg of omega-3 had greater pain reduction and fewer osteoarthritis symptoms (morning stiffness, pain in hips and knees) than those who took glucosamine by itself.

Omega-3 is actually anti-inflammatory in a very general way, which seems to be good for most people in general, even if you’re interested in preventing a variety of diseases. For more information about the various health benefits of omega-3 fat, please review the following links:

Healthier, stronger bones Improved mood regulation Reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease
Protecting your tissues and organs from inflammation Brain and eye development in babies Reduced risk of death from ALL causes

Are You Deficient in Omega-3 Fats?

Ideally, everyone really needs to aim for a lifetime of high omega-3 levels to reap all the health benefits that it has to offer, including protection from arthritis. However, the average American diet is seriously deficient in the animal-based omega-3 fats, DHA and EPA, as except for certain types of fish, which I don’t recommend eating because of pollution concerns, there are very few sources of these crucial fats.

As a result, many are deficient and omega-3 deficiency has actually been called the sixth biggest killer of Americans,

You can now measure the omega-3 level in your blood, thanks to the research of Dr. William Harris, a research professor at the Sanford School of Medicine in South Dakota, and an established authority on omega-3 fats. Dr. Harris’ research led to the development of an assay that measures your omega-3 level, which is referred to as the “omega-3 index.”

Make Sure You Include a High Quality Animal-Based Source of Omega-3

Most people today are deficient in omega-3 fats and consume far too many damaged omega-6 fats, which are found in vegetable oils and processed foods. The ideal ratio is probably close to 1:1, but the average American’s ratio is more like 20:1, or even 50:1 in favor of omega-6. Because of this severe imbalance, I recommend you supplement your diet with a source of high-quality omega-3 fats, while simultaneously reducing your omega-6 intake to bring this ratio into balance.

There are both plant and animal sources for omega-3 fats, and there are differences between them. All have different ratios of three important omega-3 fatty acids—ALA, EPA and DHA. DHA is the most important for your brain. EPA is also required by your brain, but in smaller amounts.

Plant-based omega-3 sources like flax, hemp and chia seeds are high in ALA, but low in EPA and DHA. Although ALA is an essential nutrient, the key point to remember is that the conversion of ALA to the far more essential EPA and DHA is typically inhibited by impaired delta 6 desaturase, an enzyme necessary for you to convert the ALA into the longer chain EPA and DHA. Elevated insulin levels impair this enzyme, and more than 80 percent of the U.S. population has elevated insulin levels. So from that perspective alone, it is important to include animal-based sources of omega-3 fats in your diet.

The Three Types of Animal-Based Omega-3 Fat

When it comes to choosing between the animal-based omega-3 options, the primary sources are fish, fish oil, or krill oil. As I’ll explain, I believe krill oil is the far superior choice on this list.

  • Fish: In a perfect world, you would be able to get all the omega-3s you need by eating fish. Unfortunately, the vast majority of our fish supply is now so heavily contaminated with industrial pollutants and toxins like mercury, PCBs, heavy metals and radioactive poisons that I just can’t recommend most fish any longer. However, there are suppliers, like Vital Choice, that do harvest the fish from less polluted areas of the world and they clearly are less contaminated.
  • Fish oil:I used to recommend that you take fish oil to enhance your intake of omega-3 fats, and high-quality fish oils are certainly great products with many important health benefits. However, fish oil is weak in antioxidant content. This is a major drawback for fish oil, because as you increase your intake of omega-3 fats by consuming fish oil, you actually increase your need for even more antioxidant protection. This happens because fish oil is quite perishable, and oxidation leads to the formation of unhealthy free radicals. Therefore, antioxidants are required to ensure that the fish oil doesn’t oxidize and become rancid inside your body. So, you need to consume additional antioxidants both for your health in general, AND for your increased need for antioxidants when using fish oil. Dr. Rudi Moerck expounded on these risks at great length in a previous interview.
  • Krill oil: Last but certainly not least is my preferred choice for animal-based omega-3 fats. I believe krill oil is superior to fish oil because it contains phospholipids that dramatically improve DHA and EPA absorption. It also has a very powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin, and omega-3s bonded together in a way that keeps them protected from oxidation. Many popular fish oil brands are already oxidized before you open the bottle. Krill oil is also 48 times more potent than fish oiland contains vitamin E, vitamin A, and vitamin D.Additionally, as Dr. Harris confirms, krill oil is also more potent gram for gram, as its absorption rate is much higher than fish oil. According to his research, you get somewhere between 25 to 50 percent more omega-3 per milligram when you take krill oil compared to fish oil.
“You actually get more omega-3 from eating krill,” he says.
Krill is also a completely sustainable and environmentally friendly source of omega-3. Not only is krill the largest biomass in the world, but krill harvesting is one of the best regulated on the planet, using strict international precautionary catch limit regulations that are reviewed regularly to assure sustainability. You can read more about why krill oil is completely environmentally friendly here.

If You Have Arthritis, You Need to Know About Astaxanthin

It is likely that astaxanthin may be even more powerful in helping people with arthritis symptoms than omega-3 fats, as this antioxidant is leaps and bounds more powerful than beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, lycopene and lutein, other members of its chemical family. It exhibits VERY STRONG free radical scavenging activity and helps protect your cells, organs and body tissues from oxidative damage and inflammation.

Specifically, astaxanthin is a carotenoid antioxidant produced only by the microalgae Haematoccous pluvialis when its water supply dries up, forcing it to protect itself from ultraviolet radiation. It’s the algae’s survival mechanism — astaxanthin serves as a “force field” to protect the algae from lack of nutrition and/or intense sunlight.

There are only two known sources of astaxanthin — the microalgae that produce it, and the sea creatures that consume the algae (such as salmon, shellfish, and krill). One of the reasons why I recommend krill oil is because it naturally contains astaxanthin to protect it from oxidation. Adding the antioxidant astaxanthin to fish oil reduces its susceptibility to oxidation while making its immunomodulatory properties more potent, which is the beauty of krill oil, which has this natural protection built in.

Download Interview Transcript

But although I don’t recommend many supplements, I believe many could enjoy even MORE benefits by further increasing your astaxanthin, even if you are already taking a krill oil supplement. If you decide to give astaxanthin a try on its own, I recommend a dose of 8-10 mg per day. If you are on a krill oil supplement, take that into consideration, as different krill products have different concentrations of astaxanthin, so check your label.

Arthritis Doesn’t Have to be a Debilitating Disease

Osteoarthritis can be extremely painful and debilitating disease. By losing weight, exercising, making changes to your diet and lifestyle, and using natural anti-inflammatory relief measures you can potentially overcome this disease, or at least significantly decrease pain associated with it.

  • Healthy Diet:Arthritis rates are more than twice as high in obese people as those who are normal weight, because the extra weight puts more pressure on your joints. This can not only lead to osteoarthritis, it can also make the condition exponentially worse. So if you are suffering from arthritis and are overweight or obese, losing weight is an essential form of treatment. You will want to jumpstart your weight loss by eating a healthier diet based on the principles of my nutrition plan. Limiting your fructose intake to below 15 grams a day will be an essential part of this program.
  • Exercise:Most people have little appreciation for how powerful exercise can be in preserving bone density and joint function, which can help prevent and alleviate osteoarthritis as you age.The notion that exercise is detrimental to your joints is a misconception; there is no evidence to support this belief. Instead, the evidence points to exercise having a positive impact on joint tissues — if you exercise sufficiently to lose weight, or maintain an ideal weight, you can in fact reduce your risk of developing osteoarthritis. My most highly recommended form of exercise is Peak Fitness, and this program can be used by virtually everyone. However, if you’ve already developed osteoarthritis in your knee, you’ll want to incorporate exercises that strengthen the quadriceps muscle at the front of your thigh. And, rather than running or other high-impact exercise, you may be better off with non-weight-bearing exercises like swimming and bicycling.People with arthritis must be careful to avoid activities that aggravate joint pain. You should avoid any exercise that strains a significantly unstable joint.
  • Vitamin D: Low levels of vitamin D are associated with cartilage loss in your knees, and this is one of the hallmarks of osteoarthritis. The remedy, to make sure your vitamin D levels are optimized, is simple. It involves getting your blood levels tested, then optimizing them using safe sun exposure or indoor tanning on a safe tanning bed(safe tanning beds have electronic ballasts and produce less UVA than sunshine). LINE BREAK As a last resort, you can supplement with vitamin D3; recent research suggests the average adult needs to take 8,000 IU’s of vitamin D per day in order to elevate their levels above 40 ng/ml, which is the bare minimum for disease prevention. To find out the details, watch my free one-hour vitamin D lecture.

If you need pain relief, which is typically an important component of osteoarthritis treatment, think long and hard before choosing anti-inflammatory drugs like non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and analgesics, like Tylenol. NSAIDs kill some 30,000 people every year due to bleeding ulcers, and the oral drugs have been linked to a host of problems including heart failureVioxx and Celebrex are prime examples of these very real dangers.

There are safer, natural anti-inflammatory alternatives available, including:

  • Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or “Indian frankincense,” this Indian herb is one treatment I’ve found to be particularly useful against arthritic inflammation and associated pain.
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA): Hyaluronic acid is a key component of your cartilage, responsible for moving nutrients into your cells and moving waste out.
  • Astaxanthin: As mentioned above, astaxanthin is one of the most powerful lipophilic antioxidants yet discovered and is the most abundant carotenoid pigment found in crabs, salmon, trout, shrimp, and krill. Studies have found that it can help support joint health and mobility.
  • Eggshell membrane: Elastin, collagen and glycosaminoglycans are three nutrients found in eggshell membranes, which can help support the stability and flexibility of your joints by providing your joints with the building blocks needed to build cartilage.
  • Ginger: This herb is anti-inflammatory and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.
  • Bromelain: This enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple may also be helpful.
  • Cetyl myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a “joint lubricant” and an anti-inflammatory.
  • Evening primrose, black currant and borage oils: These contain the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain. It is reasonable for many to take these as a supplement, particularly if you struggle with dry skin in the winter, as this is a strong indicator that you are deficient in these fats. I prefer the use of GLA supplements from evening primrose oil but borage oil contains a higher concentration of GLA, which means you need fewer capsules, and it tends to be less expensive.
  • Cayenne Cream: Also called capsaicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body’s supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmits pain signals to your brain.

I’m not just talking about the excruciating pain, aching and stiff joints which make us feel old before it’s time…it also hurts when others ridicule your efforts to do something about it the NATURAL way…WITHOUT putting blind faith in expensive drugs with nasty side effects. But, like you perhaps, I was determined to find a way out of debilitating pain and into a joyous, youthful existence once again, despite the ridicule.

“Not ANOTHER ‘miracle product’!” That’s what they said when they heard. But who can blame them? I’d tried everything on the market…each and every one of them promising me relief from my crippling aches and pains in my joints. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about! I mean nothing seems to work does it?

Aren’t You Tired of Cheap Sales Tricks & Misinformation?

Yep, in my quest for a solution and the truth, I figure I ended up on just about every email and mailing list for quick-fix health products there is! Both my email and mailbox would fill up with all that junk everyday (know the feeling?).

I’m sure you’ve been there too, and like me, you’ve learned the hard (and expensive!) way that things never live up to all the fancy talk. It’s no wonder we end up so skeptical and defeated.

Cheap tricks like an envelope printed with “Test Results Inside” with a slick and pushy letter from a so-called ‘doctor’. Ugh! I mean, how can you trust people like that?? Do they think we’re all stupid?

Enough already! All the impressive sounding words and “guaranteed” miracles amounted to nothing (have you been there too?). I was about to give up hope, but I tried a different approach for the one last try…

How Government Information Helped Me Uncover

This Little-Known Supplement…

I decided to get to the root of my problem and find out for myself. I started my long process of researching which eventually directed me to a series of official government websites which changed my life forever.

The first thing I unexpectedly noticed was this statement: “The choice to use a dietary supplement can be a wise decision that provides health benefits.”

It sure was good to know that at least I was on the right path! But which dietary supplement? There are so many all making the same dubious song and dance!

Thankfully, another website advised me to check with the National Library of Medicine to see FIRST-HAND actual clinical trials on various dietary supplements to evaluate their effectiveness once and for all.

Here’s what it said: Does the information say “some studies show…” or does it state where the study is listed so that you can check the authenticity of the references? For example, can the study be found in the National Library of Medicine’s database of literature citations?”

At last! I was on my way hopefully. Even if I couldn’t find anything, at least I would know the truth and know whether to believe all the nonsense which kept filling my email and mailbox daily! So I set about sifting through all the various clinical trials from the finest doctors, scientists and students around the world.

Well, I tell ya, that was one heck of a task! But I found what I was looking for…

Concrete, Research!

I read study after study completed by some of the best doctors around the world in The National Library of Medicine which I was directed to, and one word just kept appearing for “research into joint pain”: Collagen.

As it turned out, the use of collagen has been well documented and dates back to the twelfth century. Now, at last, I was on to something!

The Quest for Truth

Unfortunately, my work was not yet done. It seemed there are different types of collagen, different sources and different methods of administering it – and they all seemed to give VERY different results!

The good news was these clinical trials were evaluating all that for me. What was very interesting to see was that the effectiveness of collagen for reducing joint pain would depend very much so on it being all of the following:

  1. Type II Collagen
  2. Quality Collagen Source
  3. Natural Ingredients, NOT Synthetic
  4. Orally Administered

Later on I’ll explain why each of these 4 things are so important. As I soon discovered, there are plenty of collagen-related products out there, but none of them met all 4 of these criteria’s which studies in The National Library of Medicine made so clear that it was beneficial for people with my problem. So, the search was on…

The Benefits Europeans Have Enjoyed for Years!

…And it took me to Europe! As luck would have it, a friend of a friend introduced me to the European factory which was the premier producer of the specific, high-quality collagen I wanted.

It seems people all around Europe have been taking these collagen capsules for years and enjoying the positive benefits! I was greatly encouraged by what I found.

I felt like I’d found the Holy Grail! However, now I had the opportunity to put all that research to the test first hand. I started religiously taking natural type II collagen capsules before bed each night with a glass of water as directed…and waited.

At Last! Something Which ACTUALLY Worked For Me…

My due diligence had paid off. A few weeks later my soreness and stiffness was showing signs of easing up. 2 months later even less pain than before. 3 months later it felt like I virtually never had the pain at all!

I can’t tell you the relief at being able to enjoy life to the fullest again. Please, take a moment to picture how much better your life could be without sore and stiff joints. To be able to walk, run and do whatever it is you love doing without worry, discomfort and pain…

And now you can see if it works for you too, because you’ll be pleased to know I have now started manufacturing this incredible product in the United States!

At a startlingly low price too you’ll be relieved to hear. But first, allow me to explain exactly WHY this worked so well for me and why this specific type of collagen works the best…

The Crucial Nutrient We Eliminated from the Food-Chain

The Bible tells us that everything we need has been given to us on this Earth. In other words, the answers to our health problems could be right before our eyes in nature; we just have to look.

In the twelfth century animal hoofs were given to patients suffering from joint pain – another rich source of collagen.

Don’t worry; I’m not saying we have to eat nasty things like animal hoofs! In fact, as my research showed, the most benefit is drawn from taking collagen with those 4 criteria I mentioned earlier if you recall: Type II Collagen, Quality Collagen Source, Orally Administered, All Natural Ingredients, NOT Synthetic.

You can enjoy the marvelous benefits collagen gives you in a single capsule before bedtime. As promised, I’ll now explain why each of those 4 criteria’s are so important.

Remember: There is collagen and there is collagen! And I want you to take the same collagen I did.

Why is Type II best?

Please don’t just take my word for it. Listen to what Dr. Alex Duarte, O.D. Ph.D., has to say:

“We know that cartilage is composed of four or five different kinds of collagen. There are 14 different kinds of collagen altogether, but the primary collagen, the most predominant one, the most medicinal collagen, is collagen type II. Collagen type II also contains a powerful, newly discovered antioxidant proteoglycan called cartilage matrix glycoprotein (CMGP), which can help reduce the oxidative damage to the joint. In addition to these new discoveries, there are other ingredients in collagen type II that make it more effective than just taking glucosamine or chondroitin by themselves.

Another advantage of collagen type II over cartilage is that it is much more absorbable, Researchers have recently demonstrated about eight percent absorption of ground cartilage, whereas the components of collagen type II have a much higher absorption rate of 70 to 90 percent.

When people suffer from joint pain, there is a selective destruction of collagen type II in the joint cartilage itself. Scientists know that this particular component of cartilage is being attacked by white blood cells and somehow this activates the immune system patients to develop antibodies to collagen type II. This then sets up an immune response to all of the cartilage that is degenerating in the body. Thus, both wrists hurt, both knees hurt, the hips, the back, etc. The end result is the same. Pain, more pain, and loss of quality of life.

The question now becomes how does collagen type II work? The answer is that collagen type II’s effectiveness is accomplished through “oral tolerance.” A few years ago, Dr. Howard Weiner from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, discovered that there is a part of the intestine called the GALT (gut-activated lymphoid tissue), which is part of our immune system. Basically, white blood cells in the GALT allow us to eat a variety of different kinds of proteins without developing an allergy or sensitivity to them.

The next step was to test oral tolerance of collagen type II on human patients. Drs. Trentham and Weiner studied ten people with severe joint pain. They eliminated the standard therapies such as NSAIDS and methotrexate and fed the patients pure collagen type II. At the end of the second month, six of the ten patients showed substantial improvement and one showed a complete regression that lasted 26 months with no side effects. The clinical response in this study was defined as a 50 percent or greater reduction in swelling and tenderness, a 50 percent improvement in morning stiffness, as well as an improved 15 minute walk time and grip strength.

Thus, there were several objective and subjective criteria for measuring success. These results are profound. As a matter of fact, this study demonstrated a 70 percent response rate with no side effect, with these patients completely removed from standard medications. Even the other 30 percent of the group had improvement. And on the basis of this trial, the same doctors conducted a phase II trial on 59 patients with, again, severe joint pain. Twenty-eight received the collagen type II, while 31 received a placebo pill. What is interesting is that those who were off all drugs and taking collagen type II showed very significant stabilization and improvement, while those on placebos continued to deteriorate. In fact, four collagen type II patients showed a complete resolution of the problem, while no patients in the placebo group displayed any remission. Again, no side effects were detected. We see that oral ingestion of collagen type II may well prove to be the most effective natural means of relieving joint pain.”

Now let’s look at the next important criteria for this specific type of collagen…

Quality Collagen Source?

As Dr. Duarte pointed out, it’s all about absorption. You can ingest all the collagen in the world but if it’s just passed through your system, what’s the point?? Through our research we have found that with our special Chicken Sterna Collagen formulation as opposed to synthetic, marine or other sources is far superior than any other products out there. Our exclusive low temperature process lowers the molecular weight for assimilation and is recognized as a nutrient as the building blocks for damaged cartilage, therefore the absorption is excellent in our bodies.

Natural Ingredients, not Synthetic?

Because, like most synthetic things, your body could reject it. Why do you think just about every drug has the disclaimer: “Side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting”??? When taking a supplement you want only natural ingredients or you are defeating the purpose here. Unfortunately, spurious information has lead some to believe that collagen taken orally has no effect. Information is a valuable tool, but only if used correctly!! Our product is completely natural and safe to use.

Why Orally Administered?

This is what I learned most from the clinical studies I got from The National Library Medicine. Basically, you want your body to absorb the protein, and obviously, this makes it very easy for that to happen so the collagen can do its stuff! Dr. Duarte also makes that point as you saw.

Natural Ingredients…Very Rare

So, it took some finding, but eventually I found the correct specification collagen which met my stringent criteria; Type II, Chicken Sternum Sourced (hormone free), Natural Ingredients, Collagen Capsules, manufactured here in the USA, under strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP Standards) at an FDA registered facility.
I’m proud to offer you this incredible, capsule: “Encore Collagen”!

Safe & Effective!

Collagen is a natural protein and has no known side effects. In fact, Collagen has been awarded (GRAS) Generally Recognized As Safe.

Another Natural Benefit

During my extensive research, I also found that chicken sourced typed II collagen, specifically from the sternum is a natural source for Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Hyaluronic Acid. You see collagen cells rely on these 3 elements in order to grow and without it, the production of collagen cells does not happen. For this, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Hyaluronic Acid are naturally accruing in our product. These 3 elements are WELL known ingredients for major joint support and health products, however I cannot stress this enough, we do not add these 3 elements to our collagen product, it contains it naturally. This is not an additive, its just a natural benefit to help aid our battle against joint pain.

Look What These Doctors Say About Collagen:

Dr. Frank Woodbine, Ph.D.:

“Pure Collagen stimulates a source of natural energy in the body and those who are taking it are becoming self-evident testimonies to the power of this incredible wellness resource.

Dr. Bill Trusak, D.C. :

“I’ve been a chiropractor for the past 28 years and currently run a clinic that sees 200 people a day…I’m so thrilled to expand my practice with a product that safely and naturally helps people. I know I can recommend pure collagen and expect tremendous results for my patients.”

Dr. Edward Lafontaine :

“There is nothing on the market like collagen. I have been looking for a collagen based product for over 20 years. I have repeatedly asked manufacturers to formulate a product like pure collagen to no avail…This is the one fundamental nutrient I recommend to each and every patient.”

Go After the Cause NOT the Symptom

Let me try and illustrate this. The best way to avoid a broken arm from falling down would be to somehow stop the fall in the first place. Falling over is the root cause right? Sure, your arm will go in a cast and sling, but it’s too late then isn’t it?

What Encore Collagen offers is an effective way to address the root cause of joint pain. Cartilage is predominantly Type II Collagen- this is a FACT. What causes the problem then?

So what the clinical studies show is that the root cause is type II collagen loss for one reason or another (probably aging).  From the age of 25 our bodies ability to produce collagen diminishes gradually and there is no readily – available replacement in the food chain…until now! So doesn’t it make sense to supplement it and provide our bodies with the best joint building blocks??

The Best ‘Side-Effects’ (if you can call them that) Ever!

I say: “Forget all those nasty side-effects!” I’m tired of spending good money poisoning myself with things which only address the symptom rather than the cause- and I bet you are too! Here are the ‘side effects’ some users have reported (you’re going to love them!):

  1. A reduction in the appearance of fine line wrinkles
  2. Firmer healthier skin
  3. Thicker hair and nails

Why is this? Well let’s take a broader look at what collagen actually is and why it’s totally natural to your body…

  • Collagen is the body’s most abundant natural Protein. It is the ‘glue’ which holds the body together and is the essential structural component of all connective tissue. 75% of skin is collagen.
  • Fine line wrinkles are a sure indicator of collagen loss or deficiency. With aging, the body produces less collagen and is not contained in any foods like certain vitamins are.

So it could be possible that you’ll enjoy some very good and natural side effects from Encore Collagen too!

You Could Save a Fortune on Pain Relief!

You know what’s even better? I’ve managed to keep this rare, high-quality all natural collagen capsules at a VERY affordable price for you to enjoy the many benefits!

7 Foods That Help Fight Arthritis

Written by Frank Mangano
Friday, 25 November 2011 21:00
Foods that Fight Arthritis_sThere are a billion people living in the world today and the need to be healthy is becoming the priority of some. As much as new breakthroughs in health and science, there are still a lot of people who suffer from diseases, that of earlier been detected, might have been prevented or have been cured. And if in all possibilities, the pain brought by the disease – both chronic and acute – might be lessened.

In medical sciences, a breakthrough for new medicines has already come out to help aid in the curing of the disease. But somehow, habitually taking medications is not enough especially when there are side effects and adverse effects brought about by the drugs. In order for the treatment to be successful, the person must be willing to go the extra mile and not just depend on the effectiveness of the drugs. Proper diet and the right exercise for your body are needed in collaboration of the intake of medications. Remember, through hard work comes great reward. It is better to be prepared than to be caught off guard in the end.

When Uric levels in the blood are higher than the normal value, it accumulates mostly in the joints and tissue areas. Thus, the formation of uric acid crystal occurs, causing pain in the joints, swelling and redness, limiting your movement and your ability to continue your day to day activities. This is called Gouty Arthritis.

On the other hand, Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The pain is no longer from the inflammation but from the wear and tear of the bone and since this is a degenerative disease. So, what are the foods (fruits and vegetables) that would help you fight against Arthritis? Here are some of the top foods that you should add in your diet.

  1. CherriesWho would have thought that Cherries would help prevent arthritis? According to recent research studies based on the 2008 statistics of people having gout attacks, showed that people who eat at least 20 cherries in a day reduce their risk to half of having frequent gout attacks. Finding have also showed that because of an antioxidant properties (Anthocyanins) helps decrease the likelihood of gout attacks to 50% after 48 hours of eating two servings of Cherries. Any purple or red fruits and veggies such as grapes, berries, raspberries, beets and purple cabbages are rich in Anthocyanins, which is good for the prevention of Gouty Arthritis.
  2. BroccoliDid someone say Broccoli? Who would think that this green veggie help lessen the pain in osteoarthritis? For those who already have their hearts on this, this is good news and for those who don’t, well it’s about time you should start loving them. A research study had shown that a certain compound found in broccoli has proved to block the enzymes that activate the disease. With a generous intake of broccoli, it increases the sulforaphane (compound) in the blood, which fights osteoarthritis. Broccoli is also rich in vitamin C, Omega-3 fatty acids, high in fibre and Vitamin E that is good for the skin and heart.
  3. FishSalmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and is not only good for the heart but also for treating pain for arthritis. They help protect the cartilages by preventing the production of cytokine and enzyme (cause of swelling and pain). By eating Salmon’s polyunsaturated fats, it will also boost your immune system and improve blood circulation in the body. Aside from Salmon, Anchovies, Mackerel, Sablefish, rainbow trout and striped sea bass are also good sources of Omega-3.
  4. Spices
    • GingerGingers have naturally anti-inflammatory properties. Through regular intake of ginger, this helps reduce the inflammation and pain in the joints.
    • TurmericRich in antioxidants that will help reduce the inflammation and the pain.
  5. Fruits and Vegetables
    • MangoMangoes are rich in vitamin C, E and antioxidants which will help decrease the inflammation and swelling in the joints.
    • CantaloupeCantaloupe is rich in beta-carotene and Vitamin C. Beta-carotene and Vitamin C, together they assist the body in controlling the damage caused by the free-radicals.
    • ApplesBoron is a mineral naturally found in apples which helps reduce the likelihood of experiencing osteoarthritis. For those who are already experiencing osteoarthritis, eating apples will help relieve you from the pain.
    • PapayaPapaya contains beta-carotene and according to the RDA, it has 3 times more the amount of Vitamin C in other fruits.
    • SpinachSpinach has already a good reputation with heart ailments and cancer and who would have thought that this is also good for those having arthritis. It helps relieve the joint pain as well as the inflammation. Spinach is rich in Vitamin C, beta-carotene and Vitamin K.
  6. Extra Virgin Olive OilExtra Virgin Olive oil is rich in omega-9 which is good for the heart. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which will clearly help you with arthritis pain attack and swelling.
  7. WaterAlways keep the body hydrated at all times. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water. This will also help flush out any toxins in the body and dilutes any presence of uric acids in the body. Water acts as a cushion around the joint, preventing any friction between the bones, which causes pain if absent. Drinking water detoxifies the body with unwanted toxins, so be sure to prepare a bottle of water handy at all times to prevent dehydration. For Gouty Arthritis, drinking of alcoholic beverages are either kept in moderation or none at all. Alcoholic beverages increases uric acid levels in the body, causing gout formation in the joints and tissues.

Just remember that you are doing this for your own sake. Make it a habit of starting to take care of yourself and keeping healthy. Put it mind that no other person would exactly understand who you are and what you’re going through except yourself. Keep yourself healthy – mind and spirit and make a sound body your motivation to keep going. This is a long term commitment you must make if you want to live longer.

Knee arthritis striking at younger ages

Knee Arthritis

I found an interesting article an Knee Arthritis on the Chicago Sun-Times and I have re-published it below for your convenience

Knee arthritis striking at younger ages

Gannett News Service November 9, 2011 1:49PM

Knee ArthritisThe aches are starting earlier, as more and more people find they have arthritis of the knee at younger ages than in the past. | Steve Johnston~Sun-Times Media

Arthritis of the knee is striking Americans at younger ages, new research has found, but shedding a few pounds if you’re overweight might reduce your risk.

The studies were presented over the weekend in Chicago at the American College of Rheumatology’s annual meeting.

Nearly 6.5 million Americans between the ages of 35 and 84 will receive a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis in the next decade, according to these new projections.

“The diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis is occurring much earlier,” said study author Dr. Elena Losina.

When she compared the age at diagnosis in the 1990s to ages in the 2010s, “The average age at diagnosis has moved from 69 to 56,” she said.

Losina found that adults aged 45 to 54 will account for nearly 5 percent of all knee osteoarthritis cases in the 2010s, while they represented only 1.5 percent in the 1990s.

Losina suspects that obesity and knee injuries, both of which have become more common in the past decade, might be helping to drive the increase in knee arthritis among younger people.

New Natural Remedies for Arthritis

Natural Remedies for Arthritis

I have read an interesting article about Natural Remedies for Arthritis on the Mercola.com website and I have copied it below for your information and convenience.

“New Breakthrough for Joint Discomfort”

Forget glucosamine and chondroitin.
If you worry about your hips, knees, hands, shoulders, fingers, ankles, back, wrists, neck or any other joints, these four breakthrough ingredients could change your life…*

6 Strategies to Help Promote Flexible and Healthy Joints*

Most everyone realizes that to fully appreciate all life has to offer you want healthy joints that are comfortable and flexible.* Healthy joints make it more enjoyable to play ball with your grandson… go for a walk with your wife (or husband)… play golf.

Fun stuff… The ‘stuff’ of which memories are made.

Millions of Americans of all ages realize they could use additional support to help promote joint flexibility* – in order to help maximize their opportunities to be an integral part of their families and community.

So…

What strategies can you use to help keep your joints healthy and flexible?*

  1. Exercise. There’s a common urban legend that exercise is bad for your joints.Natural Remedies for Arthritis to promote Healthy JointMost people have little appreciation for how powerful exercise can be in supporting joint function. Vigorous low-impact exercise is beneficial – for your joints, as well as for cardiovascular, pulmonary, and other systems in your body. It’s simply a myth that you can ‘wear down’ your knees just from average levels of exercise – and/or normal activity. In fact, inactivity causes your muscles to become weaker and actually works against optimal joint flexibility and comfort. One caution, however when using this valuable tool, you need to start slowly if you have not been exercising regularly, and build up to higher activity levels otherwise you risk incurring an injury that could cause really set you back..If typical vigorous exercise is not easy for you, try walking, tai chi and yoga… as they are very low impact, yet offer many health benefits.
  2. Achieve your optimal weightto improve your bio-mechanic function. One of the outstanding benefits of exercise is its ability to help you achieve and maintain your ideal weight – which is highly beneficial to your joints.Overweight and obese people compromise joint comfort more than those who are carrying their ideal load. Each additional kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body mass increases the compressive load over your knee by roughly 4 kilograms (nearly 9 pounds).Research shows that a weight loss of as little as 11 pounds can have a positive effect on joint function. And those who are at their optimal weight experience increased joint health as compared to those who are obese or overweight. So you go full circle – losing weight reduces the load on your joints and makes it easier to exercise, and exercising helps you lose weight and supports your joint health.
  3. Eat a higher quality diet.Eliminate sugar and starchy carbs from your diet. And definitely stop drinking soda. These foods do absolutely nothing to support healthy joints or a healthy body. In fact, their potential for damage is well documented.I believe you should limit your total fructose from ALL sources to no more than 25 grams per day, as it raises uric acid levels, which is hard on your joints. Now, chances are, you consume substantially more than 25 grams per day. Approximately ¼ of Americans consume a whopping 134 grams of fructose everyday!Within your 25 grams of fructose, you could consider including some tart cherries or concentrated tart cherry juice. They contain anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, which help support a healthy immune response for your joints and whole body health. Also, in my opinion, you should base your food choices on your nutritional type to ensure you optimize your ideal macronutrient ratios.
  4. Optimize your vitamin D levels.Vitamin D also supports a healthy immune response. Please recognize that during the fall, winter and early spring in most of the U.S., Canada, and Europe, your vitamin D levels can drop precipitously. If your levels fall, you give up the support this vitamin offers for your joints and your whole body.
  5. Get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from krill or high quality fish oil. Omega-3′s support your joint health.
  6. Try EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT is an energy psychology tool that uses tapping and acupuncture meridians to help resolve the emotional factors that contribute to less-than-optimal health.

If you’re already using the above six strategies, and still want additional support for your joints, consider using a ‘joint-specific’ supplement.* I’ll talk about the one I recommend in a moment.

But first, allow me to discuss the joint support supplement everyone talks about – which many believe is not effective.

What You Should Know About Glucosamine and Chondroitin

For the past decade, people have been rushing on board the glucosamine and chondroitin train for joint care.

Yet, many are unhappy with it, or experience health problems from it.

Why?

Eight Reasons Glucosamine and Chondroitin May Not Be For You…

  1. Knee JointMany people do not believe it ‘works’ for them. It can take awhile to build up enough for people to see a direct benefit from it. I believe it’s quite possible that some people give up before reaching that point.
  2. The pills are very large and many may find them difficult to swallow – and you are often required to take large numbers of them every day. In all likelihood, those factors lead to non-compliance (not taking them).
  3. Only a small fraction of the glucosamine you take is actually utilized by your body. In the case of pills and capsules, the studies demonstrate that only about 15-20% is absorbed.
  4. Much of the glucosamine on the market is derived from shellfish, specifically crab, lobster, and shrimp shells – a common allergen. Obviously, you should avoid glucosamine if you’re allergic to shellfish.
  5. The long-awaited NIH trials on glucosamine showed disappointing results. There were no significant differences between glucosamine alone, chondroitin alone, or the two combined, when tested against placebo.
  6. While generally considered to be free of side effects, some people do experience gastro-intestinal upset from it. Chondroitin molecules are large, making it difficult for your body to digest, which could be what causes problems for some people.
  7. It’s not clear, even after many studies, whether glucosamine affects blood sugar levels. In my opinion, people with diabetes or hypoglycemia should be cautious about taking glucosamine, and should carefully monitor their blood sugar levels if taking it.
  8. Glucosamine, when taken in potassium salt form, can lead to an unnecessary salt burden, in my opinion.

BiovaFlex offers you all the nutrients contained within eggshell membrane. The eggshell membrane is the unique protective barrier between the egg white and the mineralized egg shell.

Open label trials have shown that the ingredient alone produces positive results, including support for functional flexibility in as little as two weeks. BiovaFlex™ is the first and only water-soluble eggshell membrane ingredient made in the USA.

BiovaFlex™ is nature’s own ‘formulation’ of joint nutrients – as found in eggshell membranes. As a dietary ingredient, it offers a number of nutritional building blocks to help support joint health.*

What does BiovaFlex™ Do?

As part of Mercola Joint Formula*, BiovaFlex™ helps:*

  • Support joint mobility, flexibility and function*
  • Support a wide range of motion*
  • Promote a healthy immune response*
  • Provide antioxidants that reduce free radicals for healthy joints*
  • Provide joints with the building blocks needed to build cartilage for healthy joint function*

What’s in Eggshell Membrane?

Here’s what’s contained in eggshell membrane:

  • Eggshell Membrane is good Collagen SourceCollagen – A fibrous protein that supports cartilage and connective tissue strength and elasticity.*
  • Elastin – A protein that supports skin, cardiovascular, cartilage, and spinal health.* As its name implies, elastin gives tissue its elasticity and the ability to resume its shape after stretching.*
  • Desmosine and isodesmosine – Two virtually unknown amino acids responsible for elastin’s elastic or ‘rubbery’ properties.*
  • Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) – Small amounts of glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid – vital polysaccharides that are structural components of your connective tissue, interstitial fluids and skeletal structure.*
  • Transforming growth factor-b – A protein that supports tissue rejuvenation, cellular differentiation and immune function.*

The Research Behind BiovaFlex™

Animal and clinical research suggests that BiovaFlex™ helps support joint health.*

Fifty-seven canines showed positive changes in joint mobility within seven days on BiovaFlex™. By day 28, all subjects showed increased activity and mobility, with many pet owners reporting positive effects on everyday activities.

Human joint health research was conducted on 42 subjects with regards to their knee joint function. Positive effects in their joint function were reported after 7 days, 14 days, and 6 weeks. No adverse effects were reported.

A 67 patient study published in the March 2009 issue of a peer-reviewed scientific journal found that supplementing with 500 mg of egg membrane for 8 weeks had a positive impact on joint health*… Patients reported a positive outcome as soon as 10 days after beginning to take the supplement.

An open-label study published in the May 2009 issue of Clinical Interventions in Aging concluded that supplementing with egg membrane supported joint flexibility within 7 days.*

BiovaFlex’s Safety…

Direct research and a thorough review of published scientific literature showed no suggestions of possible concern about the safety or tolerability of eggshell membrane – the origin of BiovaFlex™.

The ‘eggshell’ is obtained from ‘egg breaking’ facilities. Biova™ captures these totally natural raw materials and uses an all-natural patented mechanical process to separate the egg membrane from the shell.

The concentrated membrane is further processed using Biova’s patent pending proprietary Hydro5™ process. This breaks the egg protein down into its constituents, which are more easily assimilated. The resulting product is Ovacore™ (and the dietary supplement-grade BiovaFlex™).

This process was developed at a facility at a major Midwest university– and makes the membrane’s components nutritionally available, measureable, and water-soluble.

It should be noted that this eggshell product is a very ‘clean’ product. It comes from eggs sourced in Iowa – none come from farms involved in the recent salmonella outbreak.

More importantly, the manufacturer assures me that salmonella is virtually impossible in this product… because the hydrolysis process sterilizes it.

Another side of the safety equation is allergies. Although eggs can be an allergen, that’s more commonly true when injected, as in vaccines. A RAST-Inhibition test showed that “it is highly unlikely that eggshell membrane would present any risk to egg allergic individuals…”

Adding the Astaxanthin Factor…

Astaxanthin in LobsterAstaxanthin is a fat-soluble carotenoid with a unique molecular structure. It is similar in structure to beta-carotene, a pigment found in green vegetables. Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful lipophilic antioxidants yet discovered and is the most abundant carotenoid pigment found in crabs, salmon, trout, shrimp, and krill. It’s the substance that gives salmon its pink color.

You can thank the lobster for the discovery of astaxanthin. Researchers working with an extract of the lobster Homarus astacus first characterized astaxanthin in 1938. It was soon discovered that astaxanthin is abundant in nature, albeit mostly in very low concentrations.

Astaxanthin embeds itself in cellular membranes. It is unique among carotenoids because it traps free radicals at both ends of the molecule.* Once trapped, free radicals are passed into cellular fluids where they become neutralized by vitamin C.

Ten Times Stronger than Other Antioxidants

  • It is one of the most powerful biological antioxidants known and shows strong free radical scavenging activity.* It functions within your cells, and has nearly 550 times stronger singlet oxygen quenching than vitamin E and has greater ability to support immune function than vitamin E. In other words, astaxanthin is 550 times more effective at scavenging free radicals than vitamin E.
  • Studies comparing astaxanthin to other carotenoids have shown that it possesses antioxidant activity up to 10 times stronger than that of beta carotene, canthaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Protects Against Oxidation*

  • Not only is astaxanthin a powerful free radical scavenger for your muscles, but it can also protect against oxidation, which limits the number of free radicals produced by your body.*
  • A study published in 1990 conducted by Kurashige and associates compared the effectiveness of vitamin E and astaxanthin for preventing lipid peroxidation. The results showed that astaxanthin is 100-500 times more effective in preventing lipid peroxidation in vivo than vitamin E.

Quenching Singlet Oxygen Molecules…

  • Additionally, it’s very effective at quenching a molecule called singlet oxygen, a harmful reactive oxygen species formed through normal biological processes. Singlet oxygen possesses a high amount of excess energy that must be released to keep it from damaging other cells. Astaxanthin absorbs this energy and dissipates it as heat, thereby returning the singlet oxygen to a grounded state.
  • Because of its unique biochemistry, I believe that astaxanthin should be considered a valuable component in every antioxidant formulation. It is sometimes referred to as a ‘booster’ for common antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E.
  • More importantly, astaxanthin’s chemistry can stop these antioxidants from becoming ‘pro-oxidants’.

Astaxanthin supports joint health and flexibility.* In studies, it helped:

  • Support grip strength among tennis players*
  • Support joint health and mobility after exercise*
  • Support joint health and quicker recovery times for elite athletes after intense training and exercise*
  • Support a healthy immune response*

The DeepExtract™ Process – More of What Nature Offers…

Let me describe to you just how we process the astaxanthin to help maximize all its benefits. The greatest source of astaxanthin is found in green algae called Haematococcus pluvialis, which also contains other carotenoids such as beta carotene and lutein.

Mercola Joint Formula* supplies 2mg of this effective phytonutrient antioxidant and outstanding member of the carotenoid family.

The astaxanthin used for our product is Zanthin® supplied by one of the premier suppliers of high quality astaxanthin.  It is taken from Haematococcus pluvialis, the most abundant natural source yet discovered.

Once the tough cell wall of the algae is cracked open, it’s highly unstable, and must be extracted immediately. Our supplier uses a proprietary extraction process which yields:

  • 85-90% astaxanthin
  • 2% lutein
  • 2% carotene
  • 6% other carotenoids, including small amounts of canthaxanthin

The DeepExtract™ process creates a high quality, stable product. Plus, their O2B™ Peroxidation Blocker stabilization technology ensures the long-term (24 months) stability and efficacy of your supplement.

DeepExtract™ offers gentle treatment of high-quality astaxanthin at much lower temperatures than those used in expeller press and certain chemical solvent extraction operations. And it’s done in the absence of oxygen – which reduces degradation and chemical changes in the product.

This supercritical CO2 process:

  • Produces an extract untouched by chemical solvents
  • Creates astaxanthin free of impurities and residues*
  • Offers some of the highest efficacy profiles of any extracted products*

Our supplier shuns the use of preservatives in their efforts to stabilize their astaxanthin. Instead they use their proprietary O2B™ Peroxidation Blocker system, which:

  • Is 100% natural
  • Is non-GMO
  • Is designed to protect sensitive oils until they are consumed
  • Combines botanicals to prevent unwanted chemical reactions
  • Protects expensive and sensitive ingredients
  • Extends the shelf-life of oils
  • Boosts the effectiveness of other anti-oxidants like vitamin E, because it can chemically quench stable vitamin E free radicals

No doubt about it, BiovaFlex™ and Zanthin® provide a terrific base of support for your joints.*

But there’s more…

Ayurvedic Herb Used for Centuries…

Boswellia – or Indian frankincense – is an Ayurvedic herb used for centuries in India for joint support.*

It comes from the Boswellia serrata tree that grows in the dry hills of India. Traditionally, Indians have historically used the tree bark’s gummy resin, called salai guggal, for joint health.*

Indian frankincense contains what scientists call boswellic acids, which can help promote a healthy immune response.* With sustained use, boswellia can help maintain steady blood flow to your joints… supporting your joint tissues’ ability to boost flexibility and strength.*

Tennis players need healthy jointsBoswellia supports:

  • The normal functioning of your body’s connective tissues*
  • The normal functioning of your joints*
  • The normal flexibility of your body*
  • A normal and comfortable range of motion*

And it has been used extensively in Ayurveda for joint support…*

And Last, But Not Least – Hyaluronic Acid…

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is present in every tissue of your body. One of its most important biological functions is the retention of water… second only to providing nutrients and removing waste from cells that lack a direct blood supply, such as cartilage cells.

Cartilage is a specialized form of connective tissue, lending strength and flexibility to your body. A key component of your cartilage is Hyaluronic Acid.

Your joints are surrounded by a membrane called the synovial membrane, which forms a capsule around the ends of your bones.  This membrane secretes a liquid called the synovial fluid into your joint cavities.

It serves as a lubricant, shock absorber and nutrient carrier. As a lubricant and shock absorber, it functions to protect your joints and bones during normal movement.  Your cartilage is immersed in, and fed by, the synovial fluid… giving you an idea why it is so important to your joint health. Without HA, nutrients can’t move into these cells… and waste can’t be moved out.

Unfortunately, the process of normal aging reduces the amount of HA synthesized by your body. Oral hyaluronic acid supplementation may effectively help most people cushion their joints after just 2 to 4 months.

Hyaluronic acid side effects are rare and mild. If you’re allergic to chicken, consult your doctor before taking this product. And if mild stomach upset occurs when taken alone, take it with or after a meal.

Krill Oil Health Benefits

I found an interesting article by Dr. Frank Mangano on natural remedies for arthritis and on the benefits of krill oil to arthritis patients and I have re-published it below for your convenience

Krill Oil Provides Relief to Arthritis, Plus Other Health Benefits

Written by Frank Mangano

Krill Oil BenefitsThe antioxidant properties of krill oil and its omega-3 content are being linked to the efficacy of krill oil to the reduction of arthritis symptoms.  This information is according to a new study on the health benefits of krill oil. The study compared the relieving properties to arthritis of fish oil and krill oil by introducing them to the diet of mice. When the result came out, it revealed a reduction on inflammation. The researchers from MD Biosciences, Clanet and BioMarine said that krill oil’s significance in the reduction of arthritis symptoms makes it recommendatory as food supplement for patients suffering from inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis.Krill are tiny shrimps known for its rich omega-3 content and other essential nutrients needed by the body. It is one of the 85 species of deepwater shrimps or deepwater marine planktonic crustaceans. Krill oil has been proven to contain 48 times more antioxidant properties than fish oil.  This is according to the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) antioxidant scales.

The researchers used animal models of arthritis and were fed with 0.44 grams of krill oil and 0.47 grams of fish oil per 100 grams of diet. The results showed that the animals fed with both krill oil and fish oil showed significant reductions of hind paw swelling from arthritis compared to the swelling experienced by control animals without any supplementation of krill oil or fish oil. Krill oil caused the swelling to be reduced by 47 percent while fish oil only reduced it by 26 percent.

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is a health condition that results to the damage of joints in the body and there are 100 different forms of arthritis wherein osteoarthritis is most common. Also known as degenerative disease, osteoarthritis is caused by an infection or trauma to the joint or by old age. The primary symptom of arthritis is constant pain in the neck, back, feet, hip or knee. The pain is caused by the inflammatory processes happening around the joint.

The most common symptoms of arthritis are swelling, pain and joint stiffness. Some types of arthritis may also cause damage to internal organs. The other symptoms are difficulty of movement, fever, fatigue, weight loss, muscle ache and pain, and difficulty of sleeping. Arthritis is also one of the common causes of disability in the United States with over 20 million recorded individuals suffering from the health condition.

Unfortunately, some types of arthritis like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cannot be completely prevented. But the risk of getting arthritis can be reduced by keeping an active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy body mass index, joining physical therapy sessions for arthritis prevention, and by having a healthy diet.

Pain is the primary indication of having arthritis. But medical examinations like blood tests and radiology is needed to confirm the presence of arthritis and to determine its type. Rheumatoid arthritis is usually associated with morning pain, stiffness of the joints and difficulty of moving. Radiographs are also used to determine the severity of the arthritis.

There is no cure to arthritis and the treatments used on patients are only to reduce the symptoms and lessen the pain experienced. Arthritic patients are often given a restricted diet plan, dietary supplements and are subjected to physical therapy to offset the occurrence of the symptoms. Corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to people with arthritis to reduce inflammation and reduce joint damage. For worse cases, patients undergo joint replacement surgery or arthroplasty to avoid further complications. Exercise has also shown long term relief from arthritis.

Arthritis Prevention and Relief

The first step to prevent the onset of arthritis and to help relieve its painful symptoms is by maintaining an active lifestyle followed by a healthy diet. There are many foods that aggravate and worsen the swelling and pain caused by arthritis. Proteins from food such as beef, eggs, wheat, oranges, coffee, soy, milk, and malt are known to worsen the symptoms of arthritis. Capsaicinoids are irritants that directly affect the pain receptors inside mucus membranes and the skin. These are found in abundant supply in red hot chili peppers.

Drinking excessive amounts of alcoholic drinks and smoking are also known to increase the risk of developing arthritis. People who practice binge drinking and smoking have weaker immune systems. This increases their sensitivity to the irritants found in food. But the foods thought to worsen the symptoms of arthritis have not been proven to actually cause the disease. Medical experts will only advice sufficient intake of calcium to promote bone health.

Green Tea: Natural Relief to Arthritis

In a study conducted by the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio, it was found that the antioxidants contained in green tea reduce the severity and incidence of arthritis. Mice were used to examine the effects of polyphenols in green tea in the reduction of the symptoms caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The mice were fed with water treated with green tea in relative dosage to human consumption.  Collagen was used to induce arthritis in the mice. The study concluded that green tea decreased the risk of getting rheumatoid arthritis in mice.

Benefits of Krill Oil

It has been proven by scientific studies that krill oil contains more antioxidants than fish oil. Over the years, fish oil is beginning to receive criticism regarding its health benefits. Though fish oil contains omega-3 and other antioxidants known to help the body fight free radicals, it can easily oxidize once extracted from fish and develops harmful effects to body. Krill oil, on the other hand, is more stable than fish oil. It also contains 48 times more antioxidants. Other than its antioxidant properties, krill oil is also effective in promoting liver health, maintaining good blood sugar levels, and good skin.

Krill oil contains phospholipids that protect cells from damage caused by toxins and free radicals. It also contains Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), two of the three essential Omega 3 fatty acids, that stimulates the secretion of prostaglandins, the anti-inflammatory enzyme produced by the body. This makes krill oil an effective natural relief to arthritis and other chronic inflammatory diseases. The DHA in krill oil is also effective in brain development and in maintaining good memory.

Arthritis and Natural Treatment of Arthritis

Natural Treatment of Arthritis

I found a good article on the Mercola.com website which explains what is arthritis and what are the natural treatments of arthritis that you should consider  I have copied it below for your convenience.

Important Details You Need to Know About Arthritis

Visit the Mercola Video Library

In this video, Dr. Mercola explains what arthritis is, and how you can treat it using natural methods that are free of side effects.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Arthritis is a very common health problem that sends over 20 million people to their physician’s office each year. It’s important to realize that “arthritis” is divided into two primary types: osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD); the wear-and-tear form of arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

These two types are completely different, even though they have some similarities.

They both affect the joints and can be connected with joint stiffness, pain, inflammation and swelling.

However, their underlying causes are distinctly different.

What’s the Difference Between Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis usually occurs in older individuals, but can also be caused by repetitive stress or acute trauma.

Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, can affect you at any age, including children. Fortunately, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is relatively rare.

Understanding the differences between the two types of arthritis will help you distinguish which one you have.

Osteoarthritis – Degenerative joint disease usually affects the distal joints, or the joints at the end of your fingers and toes, not the middle ones. Additionally, it’s not symmetrical, so typically you may have it on just one joint, or on one hand or foot and not the other.

Rheumatoid arthritis – RA, on the other hand, is an autoimmune disease that causes your body to break itself down. Therefore, it tends to be bilateral and symmetrical, meaning it’s the same on both sides of your body. If you only have a specific joint affected on one side of your body it is far less likely to be RA.It also affects your middle joints, and is associated with joint deformities, especially your hands and fingers. It can be very crippling, and people do die from rheumatoid arthritis, so it’s not something to be treated lightly.

Treatments that Work for Both Types of Arthritis

Some of the treatment methods available are similar for both, as both involve joint pain, swelling and inflammation. Hence the typical anti-inflammatory approaches such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and analgesics, like Tylenol, can be used for either.

However, while these can relieve pain – and there’s a lot to be said for pain relief – it’s very important to understand that the regular, chronic use of these types of medications are associated with significant, and very serious, side effects such as kidney and/or liver damage. In the U.S. overuse of analgesics such as these are very common sources of kidney failure.

NSAIDs also kill some 30,000 people every year due to bleeding ulcers, and the oral drugs have been linked to a host of problems, including heart failureVioxx and Celebrex being prime examples of these very real dangers. This is not to say that they are not useful agents in some cases, however you need to use them very cautiously.

This is also why it’s so vital that you seek out the underlying cause of your problem and treat it “at the root,” so you do not need to pursue these types of medications.

With respect to treatments, there are some commonalities even when using natural approaches.

Omega-3 fats – One of the primary treatment methods you’ll want to include for either of these conditions is a high quality source of animal-based omega-3 fats such as krill oil. Omega-3s are an essential component that your body needs to reduce inflammation.

Nutritional typing – Your unique biochemistry and genetics influence the ratio of fat, protein and carbohydrates your body needs to thrive, so eating for your nutritional type will ensure that you get the optimal macronutrient ratio out of your diet.

Safe symptomatic approaches for pain — There are some symptomatic approaches you can use for both conditions.

One of them would be glucosamine, which is especially beneficial for osteoarthritis. However, understand that although useful, this is also little more than a band-aid and will not treat the underlying cause. But it’s certainly safer than using NSAIDs and other dangerous medications.

Another treatment I’ve found to be particularly useful is the Indian herb boswellia. It is used very effectively to treat joint inflammation, but again, it’s not treating the cause, only the symptom.

Acupuncture is also a safe and typically effective treatment method for pain.

For even more all-natural alternatives for NSAIDs, please see this previous article.

Special Considerations for Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis

The methods I mention above can all be used to reduce pain and inflammation, but rheumatoid arthritis with its crippling and deformities is far more severe, and is generally treated with very aggressive medications.

In fact, the drugs used for rheumatoid arthritis are some of the most dangerous drugs used in medicine. High doses of prednisone are common, as well as immunosuppressants and anti-cancer agents to treat the severe pain and swelling.

In my clinic, we use a modified  protocol that was initially developed by Dr. Thomas Brown, which is based on treating mycoplasma infection with antibiotics. I had a fair amount of success with his protocol when I was using it. However, over the years I found that including the use of dietary modification has dramatically improved the response rate. We also include NST (Neurostructural Integration Technique) in our protocol, which has been found to be very effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.

One new addition to the protocol is low dose Naltrexone which I would encourage anyone with RA to try. It is inexpensive and non toxic, and I have a number of physician reports documenting incredible efficacy in getting people off of all their dangerous arthritis meds.  Please understand though that this is for RA, not for osteoarthritis.

Additionally, nearly all autoimmune diseases have two primary considerations that need to be addressed.

Vitamin D deficiency – Almost universally, autoimmune diseases have an underlying vitamin D deficiency. The further you go from the equator, the higher the incidence of RA becomes in the population. The remedy, of course, is to make sure your vitamin D levels are optimized. It’s virtual malpractice and negligence if you have an autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and your vitamin D levels are not getting checked regularly by your physician. For more information on vitamin D and how to optimize your levels, please see this link.

Emotional trauma — The second factor, which is also almost universally present in most all autoimmune diseases, is some kind of predisposing traumatic emotional insult that typically occurs before the age of five or six.

And unless that specific insult is addressed in some type of effective treatment modality, then the underlying emotional trigger will not be removed, allowing the destructive process to proceed. Therefore, it’s very important to have an effective tool to address these underlying emotional traumas. In my practice, the most common form of treatment used is a form of psychological acupressure called the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

When you combine these — especially in the hands of a skilled clinician — with some of the safer modalities to treat and alleviate the pains and symptoms you can make great progress even with this debilitating condition.
